The B286HK comes with a three-year warranty on parts, labor, and backlight and includes DVI, HDMI, DisplayPort (full-size), and upstream USB cables. The B286HK has two built-in, 2-watt speakers that, like most monitor speakers, are moderately loud, but a bit too trebly. Two additional USB 3.0 downstream ports are mounted on the left side of the cabinet. Video inputs include two DisplayPorts (full-size and mini), one HDMI with Mobile High-Definition Link (MHL) charging capabilities, and one dual-link DVI, all of which are located at the rear of the cabinet, along with an upstream USB 3.0 port, two downstream USB 3.0 ports, and an audio input. Other settings include Wide Mode (aspect ratio), Picture-in-Picture, and Picture-by-Picture positioning, and Volume Control. The B286HK also offers 6-Axis Saturation and 6-Axis Hue settings that give you much more control over color quality than the usual red, green and blue settings that you get with the Lenovo ThinkVision Pro2840m ( at Amazon), the Philips Brilliance 4K Ultra HD Display (288P6LJEB) ($678.18 at Amazon), and the Asus PB287Q ($613.99 at Staples) monitors.
Picture setting include Brightness, Contrast, Color Temperature, and Sharpness. There are six buttons on the lower bezel that let you access and navigate the settings menus, turn the monitor on and off, select an input source, and choose one of five picture presets (Standard, User, Eco, Movie, and Graphics). The screen has a non-reflective coating that does a great job of keeping glare to a minimum. You can also rotate the panel 90 degrees for Portrait-mode viewing, but the image will not automatically rotate you'll have to use your graphics control panel for that. The stand has a mounting arm equipped with a sliding hinge that raises the panel 6 inches and provides 35 degrees of tilt and 120 degrees of swivel adjustability. It uses a matte-black cabinet that weighs 18 pounds and has dark-gray, 0.6-inch bezels and four VESA mounting holes on the back. Green color accuracy could be better, but this is a common issue among TN panels and doesn't prevent the B286HK ($359.00 at Amazon) from becoming our newest Editor's Choice for midrange UHD monitors. With the Acer B286HK ($599), you get a beautiful 3,840-by-2,160-resolution image, good dark and light gray-scale performance, and fast pixel response and input lag times that make for a smooth gaming experience. Vendors such as Acer, Asus, Philips, and Dell have introduced 28-inch midrange UHD displays that use Twisted Nematic (TN) panels, which are typically cheaper to manufacture than In-Plane Switching (IPS) panels, but can't match the latter's color accuracy and viewing-angle performance. There may not be a wealth of 4K content available, but that hasn't stopped most monitor manufacturers from tossing their hat into the Ultra-High-Definition (UHD) ring.
